DO NOT OPEN ANY MEDTRONIC PRODUCT UNTIL PATIENT ON TABLE & READY TO USE IT
1. Put pump (leave in package) in warming cabinet.
2. Put a liter of saline into the warming cabinet.
3. Open catheter package
4. Throw away calculation cards, use the formula sheets in the programmer case.
5. Tuck the ruler in your pocket for later use.
6. Give the stickers to the circulator.
7. Save the box until the case is charged.
8. Follow implant instruction guide located in the programmer case.
9. While you are setting up the purge, squeeze the pump in the package, this burps the packaging to allow for easier removal of the pump.
10. When the catheter is in place put the pump in the water bath on the sterile table.
11. Once the pocket is ready, have the pump emptied. Pull out approximately 15 cc. of fluid from center port pull back to 20cc. and maintain negative pressure when removing the needle.(leave a vacuum)
12. Have scrub nurse to put out (1) syringe, 1cc to cork catheter if in place and dripping CSF fluid to prevent spinal headache, forceps may damage catheter, 3cc to flush side port with preservative free saline, 10cc to receive drug from us, 20cc to remove water.
13. Use the 25g. on the 3cc. syringe to access side port to check the one way valve it will drip out the side valve where catheter connects , use 22g. to access center catheter port.
14. Take the panty hose (dacron cuff) and stretch it (a lot). Pull it over the pump until 2/3 of the pump is covered. Tie the string twice on the side opposite the catheter connector port.
15. Pass the drug from syringe to syringe (DO NOT use a medicine cup to avoid air exposure)
16. Write the catheter length on bottom of registration form be sure it gets on all 3 copies. Make sure you get the correct model # on your registration form.
17. When figuring priming bolus the ml. total volume is your lower to higher concentration your higher to lower is .1 higher.
Placement tips:
… Turn the sideport to midline to prevent bumping ribs and hip bone.
… When the spinal needle is in place thread in as much catheter as you can.
… Use the white plastic wrench to tighten the connection on the tunneling rod BEFORE using.
… Save the two pieces of cut catheter so we can figure total length.
Example:
… Dead space volume should be less than 0.5 cc.
… Priming bolus should be slightly less than half of drug concentration.
… If you are using 5mg/cc priming bolus should be <2.5cc
